The Pigeon Explains

YouTube

Hidden Pigeon Company, Marobru Productions

The Pigeon hosts a show in which he confidently answers questions. Except he has no idea what he’s talking about. Lucky for us, he knows a kid that knows.

OVERVIEW
- 10 episodes
- 5 to 7-minutes
- Live-action + puppets + kids
- Programming Bucket: Infotainment

WHY WE WANT TO MAKE THIS SHOW
Lots of how-to shows treat kids like they don't know much. We want to make a show that starts from a place of respect and says to kids: You know more than we do and, at the end, you will know
more than you did.

WHY THIS WORKS ON YOUTUBE
This idea leverages YT as a search platform and leans into the Mo-ownable piece of the puzzle.

CREATIVE SUMMARY
THE PIGEON EXPLAINS! features Mo Willems' marquee character, THE PIGEON, teaming up with a new kid friend each episode. This kid shows The Pigeon (and the audience) how to do an essential kid skill.
Why is The Pigeon doing a YouTube show? Easy: The Pigeon knows everything about everything and instead of keeping all that knowledge to himself, he is offering to share his brilliant bird
brain with the world. You. Are. Welcome. There is just one problem: It quickly becomes apparent that The Pigeon has no idea what he is
talking about. For example, when explaining how to make a sandwich, The Pigeon says: “First
get some sand. Then you want to get a witch.”
It’s at this point when we hear a CHORUS OF KID VOICES yell: “Noooooo!” The Pigeon is shocked. No? That’s not how you do it? After more wrong attempts to explain, The Pigeon gets upset and gives up! Well, how is he supposed to know anyway? He’s a pigeon! And it’s not like there’s anybody else in the whole world that knows how to make a sandwich!
VOICE: “I know how to make a sandwich!” The Pigeon looks around, confused. What? Who said that?!
CUT TO: A 5 to 7 year-old kid in their home waving to camera. Back to The Pigeon who reacts. Wait a minute. The Pigeon knows that kid! That kid is their friend, whom they haven’t seen in forever! Will this friend really show him how to do thing? “Yes!” the kid responds.
Huzzah! The Pigeon zips out of his color card and zips into frame next to the kid.
Throughout the episode, the kid shows The Pigeon (and our audience) how to do an essential kid skill. Up until this moment, we have seen The Pigeon’s egotistical side. Now we get to see
The Pigeon’s sweet side as he genuinely geeks out at how good this kid is at what they are doing. When the kid is finished, they ask The Pigeon what he thinks. The Pigeon answers openly
and honestly: “IT’S THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING I’VE EVER SEEN IN MY WHOLE PIGEON-Y LIFE!”
